Exhibition Opening: Pauline Benton and Chinese Shadow Theatre


The Ballard Institute & Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut will celebrate Spring on Sunday, April 1 with the grand opening of Red Gate: Pauline Benton and Chinese Shadow Theater in the United States, an exhibition of rare Chinese shadow figures from the collection of Pauline Benton, curated by Stephen Kaplin and Kuang-Yu Fong of New York’s Chinese Theater Works. Noted writer Grant Hayter-Menzies will be on hand at the opening to read excerpts from his new biography of Pauline Benton, Shadow Woman: The Extraordinary Career of Pauline Benton.

Chinese will be performing Three Women, Many Plays, a shadow show about Benton’s adventures in China.
