Zodiac!

Western or Eastern, people believe the time they were born determines their character. In the U.S., you’re asked: “Are you a Leo? a Scorpio?” In China, the question is: “Are you a Rooster? a Monkey?” Just as European astrology says your birth-month shapes your personality, the Chinese Zodiac says your character depends on the year you were born. Chinese Theatre Works’ latest shadow puppet production is an entertaining introduction to Chinese culture through this ancient tradition.

Zodiac! tells the stories behind the twelve-year cycle of animals which make up the Chinese Zodiac. It presents the traditional meanings of each animal, and turns the folktales and legends of the Zodiac into stunning visual theater, taking full advantage of the cinematic possibilities of overhead projector shadow puppetry. The animal figures are modeled on antique leather figures from China, and on the delicate artistry of Chinese paper-cuts.

Chinese Theatre Works’ master storytellers narrate Zodiac! to the accompaniment of Chinese classical and folk music. The piece, developed specifically for young audiences, and suitable for venues of all sizes, also incorporates audience participation into the theatrical experience.
