| We are proud to announce that Chinese Theatre Works' Co-Artistic & Technical Director, Stephen Kaplin, was awarded a 2006 Henry Hewes Award for Notable Effects by the American Theatre Wing. He won the award, one of the highest honors in U.S. theatrical design, for his work designing and constructing the puppets for Ping Chong's acclaimed 2005 show Cathay: Three Tales of China. Cathay was a unique collaboration between artists in New York, Seattle and Xian, China; working on the show gave Stpehen the opportunity to work closely with and learn from traditional Chinese puppeteers in Xian as they developed the piece. The Hewes awards, originally the Maharam Awards, were established in 1964 as the first design awards allowing Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway shows to compete equally. Stephen joins Ping Chong, Peter Schumann, Julie Taymor, Theodora Skipitares, Paul Zaloom, and many other longtime friends and colleagues among the noted artists who have recieved Hewes Awards. | ||

Our new production, Three Women, Many Plays, won Best Writing and Direction; our two storytellers, Co-Artistic Director Stephen Kaplin and Director Emerita Jo Humphrey, won Best Narration; and the company was honored for Excellence in Performance and Best Short Plays for both Three Women and Tiger Tales, our other contribution to the festival. | ||
